Incomparable Comparisons to the Nazi Era

For my first non-vacation blog post, I pick up the theme with which I ended my post on Auschwitz – the sheer idiocy and ignorance of anyone in today’s political world making comparison to the Nazi realm.

In today’s Philadelphia Inquirer (page A9, In the Nation, “’Gestapo’ comment spurs reaction”) we see two paragraphs about how Paul LePage, the Republican governor of Maine, becomes the latest politician making incomparable comparisons between today’s political topics and the Nazi world.

In this instance, LePage stated that the Supreme Court ruling upholding the federal healthcare law “gave Americans no choice but to buy health insurance or ‘pay the new Gestapo – the IRS.’”

I don’t have an issue with politicians making exaggerated and reactionary statements about something they oppose politically. It’s America, after all, and they are free to do so, no matter how it might make them look. I do, however, completely disagree with this trend of recent years to continually compare to various aspects of the Nazi world.

People, (or should I say “Politicians”) there are no comparisons between anything said or done in our (American) political world and the Nazi era. None. Stop making these ridiculous statements; you are only making yourself look uneducated, ignorant and idiotic.

One last thought… I don’t recall and my politics have shifted significantly since, but did Democrats make these idiotic comparisons to the Nazi world back when they were busy opposing the Bush presidency? They felt the same way about Bush as Republicans currently do about Obama (both polarizing Presidents pushed the opposing party off the deep end in extreme opposition), but I can’t recall if their MO included such egregious errors of comparison. I’m not suggesting that there is a concerted Republican effort to make these comparisons, simply noting that all examples of late come from the Republican side of the political arena. Sadly.
