On US Olympic Uniforms

So many things happening in the world, and I’m behind on my blogging.

Here are my thoughts on the US Olympic uniforms – designed by an American (Ralph Lauren) but not made by Americans. Silly? Yes. Stupid, even? Yes. And I blame the USOC – it should be a part of the contract – not Mr. Lauren, who has promised to make the 2014 Olympic uniforms in America.

The issue was politicized by our incompetent “leaders” in Washington, D.C., another item to add to the previous item (singular) on which there was bipartisan agreement this year. But having future uniforms made in America is not enough. The real issue is strengthening the US Textiles industry, and only a significant improvement there would make the hullabaloo over the US uniforms of any worth. I doubt the bipartisan harmony would last, however, through the kind of extended political conversation it would require to help American clothing manufacturers.

A note to the USOC, however – they should consider making an “Outfitters Olympics” of the next contract opportunity. Allow up and coming designers to compete to win the contract, and let American companies compete to manufacture the winning design. What could be more American than that? Just don’t make a reality TV show out of it, please! We already have more than enough of those.
