Waterfalls and rainbows. That is how I will always think of Letchworth State Park. The temps were still hotter than I like but my day there was undeniably beautiful.
As is often the case, I didn’t do enough research in advance of my trip. I would have hiked from the Lower to the Upper Falls. As it was, what hiking I did proved just how far out of shape I am right now. Note to self – you have one month to get ready for hiking in Acadia National Park!! Get a move on…bust your butt a little! (It’s a tough love note to self, lol.)
To get closest to the Lower Falls, I had to squish through LOTS of mud. I felt like I was in a Tough Mudder race; why anyway would do that for fun is beyond me! But more power to them… 🙂 Short slips in the mud the whole time, but I’m very proud to say I never came close to falling. That would have been gross, and problematic – I couldn’t ruin my car seats like that!
The falls were spraying lots of mist. My camera lens, sunglasses, camera body, and me were all pretty water-spotted up once I headed back up the trail. Felt so good, and it took me all of a few seconds to clean the lens.
The Middle Falls were lovely. The sound of the falls is magical, and the feel of them is nice and cool (the mist). As I was moving along the trail, I turned to look at the falls again and saw a stunning rainbow. I got so excited – “It’s my lucky photography day – waterfalls with rainbows!!! but it became obvious to me that this must happen often at the falls. The mist is enough to make it feel like rain and if the sun is out or comes out, Voila! Rainbows! I saw more rainbows today than the number (zero!) I saw in Hawaii. (Hawaii was fantastic but I remain a bit bitter about the lack of rainbows in the so-called rainbow state. Maybe today will make up for it a bit.)
The Upper Falls were awesome but photographing was tough with the sun directly above. No, I haven’t gotten out early enough for early morning sun a single day yet. In my defense, breakfast is served at 9 so why should I get up before then? Anyway, while resting at the top of one set of stairs, what should happen again but another rainbow! It was fabulous. I was trying to read while resting, but the appearing and disappearing rainbows were a major distraction. I snapped lots of photos because I wanted to be sure to get at least one or two good shots. Success!
I ended my time at the Park with a late lunch / early dinner at the Glen Iris Inn situated right in front of the Middle Falls. I had a Sweet Heat Pizza – so good – and a salad, because I feel like I haven’t been getting enough vegetables this week…
The drive back to Canandaigua was awesome – windows down, moon roof open, enjoying the breeze and some good tunes. Life is always good on vacation!!
Here are some pics from the day, enjoy!
